History

Gilbert's Welding & Machine Shop, Inc. has been in business over 40 years serving residential, commercial and industries in Centerville and surrounding counties.

It all began in a one-car garage in the Twomey community of Centerville, in 1972, with owner John Gilbert learning to weld from the late Mr. Bud Love. From that location, John moved his business to a more spacious building, to what is now the Hickman Farmers Coop, and employed several people. Then in 1985 John purchased land from his brother Bobby, on Highway 100, and erected a building on it to be the new home of Gilbert's Welding. It is located about half way between Centerville and Lyles and about 20 miles southeast from Dickson.

In 1994 we needed more space. We doubled the size of the building to accommodate a larger work area and more employees. Within the building, a small area was devoted to hydraulic fittings and hoses but the need to expand to an outside facility was becoming necessary, as there was not enough room to accommodate the various fittings needed to meet the demands of customers.

Construction began on a 1200 sq.ft. building in the fall of 2002 to be the home of the "Hydraulic Center." We installed many shelves were to hold the various Parker fittings that were purchased. The Tubes N' Hoses Center was set up in the hydraulic building. With this equipment, we can duplicate virtually any tube or hose, either metric or American. We specialize in bending and forming metal tubing from 3/16" to 1 ¼". Custom fabrication and production work for automobiles, trucks, buses, farm, industrial, marine, mining, construction, forestry, chemical, manufacturing, instrumentation, sports vehicles and much more.

Then in the summer of 2004, John had the urge to build a body shop; the love of old automobiles may have influenced this want. Construction of a four bay shop with an enclosed down draft spray booth was constructed on the premises to do business as, "Gilbert Village Paint and Body Shop", specializing in antique car or truck restoration. The body shop also has the equipment to install exhaust systems on automobiles using FloMaster mufflers.
